On June 2nd 2024, a significant rockfall occurred in Xi_beach, affecting residents and visitors of Kefalonia island in Greece. Since 2020, the RemoteSensing Laboratory research team at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has been diligently monitoring the steep slopes, surrounding the beachfront using Leica Geosystems, P50 TLS and DJI UAS equipment with the support of METRICA AE, Hexagon AB SmartNet. Our goal is to evaluate potential risk areas along the beach and provide local authorities with crucial information and insights about the safety of the visitors.
Our multitemporal study, utilizing algorithms like the M3C2, identified failing areas leading to potential rockfalls in the future. We're pleased to report that our efforts successfully pinpointed the exact location of yesterday's rockfall, preventing any human casualties.
This incident underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive measures in safeguarding tourists and local communities, subjects that are taught in the Postgraduate Program "Environmental, Disasters, and Crisis Management" https://edcm.edu.gr/en/ .
